What is Plarn?

Plarn is a word created to describe plastic yarn, made out of recycled bags, which you use to make waterproof items.

I will teach anyone to do this. I also sell useful items in case someone doesn’t want to make it. I offer one of a kind items to be donated to raise money for your cause. Due to the fact I am always working on many projects for the community, I can always use help processing bags. If your group is looking to volunteer with a fun project let me know! I go to schools or groups and teach this. I can always use the help and the bags, especially to keep them out of the landfill. The kids learn a new way to become involved in something bigger and really enjoy it. I get thousands of bags during the bag drives.

How did I start doing this?

After being an at home mom for years I started working at a retail store when the kids were in school. I was shocked at how much plastic was thrown away before we even purchase items. A woman came in asking for some bags to make mats. I loved it so much I wanted to learn. Having never crocheted in my life, I told them I was going to change the world and teach everyone I could during that FIRST time seeing them turn the bags into plarn. I was taught to make mats for the homeless. I knew this was my calling. I used to hate these bags, with a passion. I was known where I worked as the “tree hugging hippie” because I hate what our spoiled living is doing to this planet and natural resources. From that first minute seeing someone process the bags to crochet them, I became The Bag Lady. Now everything I hated about them before, is a good thing. There are so many of them and they stay here forever.

My ultimate goal isn’t to give the homeless mats. It is to give them jobs. I am working on becoming a non-profit to offer employment to hard to employ so that we can make useful items out of plarn to be donated to the community.

The Bag Lady Experience

“I love this lady. I love what she stands for. I love what she is doing. I love her enthusiasm. I have purchased a few items from her and they far surpassed what I expected. This project she is involved in should be so important to everyone !!! Helping the environment. Helping homeless people. Helping children. Helping people in need. Her heart is huge and her vision is vast. I’m proud to know her and hope to buy more items or contribute in other ways. Her ideas are awesome..”

Arynn Blazer

“I have known Shari for a few years. She is the most compassionate and hard working woman that I know. Her work that she is doing is one of a kind. Her love for the community, animals and the earth is hard to come by. On many occasions I have had the chance to help her demonstrate the bag process to school age children of all ages. We have so much fun transforming young minds to think globally and outside themselves. I am very proud to collect bags for her at my work place and be part of such a great cause. It is awe inspiring how she brings people together of all ages to change the world one bag at a time. ”
